Between 01 January and 19 June 2026, Insecurity Insight identified at least 158 incidents in which aid workers were killed, injured, kidnapped or arrested (KIKA) in 23 countries and territories.* Across these incidents, 65 aid workers were killed, 123 injured, 46 kidnapped and 83 arrested.
More than half of all killings (56%) occurred in three countries – South Sudan (15 aid workers killed), followed by the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) and Sudan (11 each). In contrast, just over half of all reported injuries (51%) were concentrated in a different set of countries: Lebanon and Ukraine (22 injuries each), and Iran (19). The concentration of aid worker killings in the oPt, Sudan, and South Sudan also reflects differences in the types of violence affecting aid workers. In the oPt and Sudan, most killings resulted from drone and artillery strikes, whereas in South Sudan aid workers were predominantly killed in shootings, with one reported fatal airstrike.

AfricaBurkina Faso30 June 2026: In Ouagadougou city, Kadiogo province, the UN Human Rights Office announced plans to close its office on 30 November 2026, ending its ability to monitor, document, and report on human rights abuses. The announcement comes three months after the military junta suspended the office’s operations over a press release that called on them to uphold civic space. These actions follow a pattern of systematically shutting down media outlets, labour unions and charities who have tried to investigate the military junta. Malawi01 July 2026: In Mwanza town and district, Southern region, a male Malawian Red Cross volunteer providing Restoring Family Links (RFL) service and First Aid was injured by protestors when violence broke out at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium involving repatriated Malawians who had recently returned from South Africa following xenophobic attacks. South Sudan29 June 2026: Between Pajut and Payuel villages, Duk county, Jonglei state, a humanitarian convoy belonging to the John Dau Foundation (JDF) was ambushed by armed Murle youth at around 1400hrs while transporting workers returning from a from a joint training organised by the World Food Programme (WFP) and Action Against Hunger. At least 17 people were killed, including five JDF aid workers, killed and nine people were injured, including three JDF aid workers and a driver. Sudan26 June 2026: Near El Rahad town, North Kordofan state, a humanitarian aid truck on its way to El Obeid carrying 50 tons of flour was almost completely destroyed by RSF forces in the evening, killing a driver and injuring an unspecified number of people. 30 June 2026: Near Tendelti town, West Darfur state, a UNHCR-contracted truck carrying humanitarian relief supplies en route to Abu Jubaiha in South Kordofan state was hit by a suspected RSF drone strike, destroying approximately 50 metric tonnes of relief items. The driver escaped unharmed, but destroyed the cargo, including 1,000 non-food item kits comprising 3,000 blankets, 2,000 jerry cans, 1,000 kitchen sets, 3,000 sleeping mats, 2,000 plastic sheets, and 1,000 solar lamps. EuropeUkraine24 June 2026: In Kherson city, raion and oblast, two employees of Norwegian People's Aid were killed and four others injured when a demining team was reportedly struck by a Russian Iskander-M missile at around 1250hrs. One employee was killed at the scene, while another later died from injuries sustained in the attack. 30 June 2026: On Al-Adl Street, Nablus city and governorate, the headquarters of At-Tadamun Charitable Society was raided by Israeli forces at around 0500hrs, who vandalised the premises and issued a military order closing the building for a year. During the more than two-hour raid, the contents of the offices were damaged and soldiers posted a notice at the entrance declaring the association "illegal" and alleging that it supported terrorism. The closure order prohibited entry to, use of or any activities at the society's headquarters. The society provides assistance to poor families and orphans, as well as health, education and social welfare services. Later the same day, the building was reopened following intervention by the Palestinian General Authority for Civil Affairs.
